Kappa Sigma fraternity is hosting their first philanthropy week to benefit Fisher House Sept 9-13.
Fisher House is a national non-profit organization that provides a network of 38 comfort homes on the properties of military and veterans affairs medical centers. The Foundation also provides support to families of patients receiving care at the nearby medical center.
“I’m excited to see the Kappa Sigma brothers as well as the OCU community to come together in benefit for our military,” said Dallas Parker, Kappa Sigma vice president of brotherhood development.
Kappa Sigma’s Military Heroes Campaign was designed to honor and help the thousands of wounded military veterans returning from active duty.
The fraternity, which started planning the philanthropy week in July, has five days of events planned.
Starting Monday, they will be selling “The Men of Kappa Sigma” calendars outside of the caf for $15 each.
On Tuesday, a Penny Wars competition will start. The winner of this will receive 15 percent of the proceeds to use for their philanthropy. SGA and many Greek organizations are participating.
Wednesday, they will be placing flags on the Quad for the Sept. 11 memorial. Starting on Sept. 9, for every dollar they raise a flag will be placed.
Thursday is promotion day, where they will be around campus promoting their philanthropy. Kappa Sigma brothers will be promoting the benefit concert and boot camp by handing out flyers and answering questions in front of the caf.
On Friday they will be hosting a benefit concert and boot camp. Anyone can perform in the concert, which has a $5 entry fee. The boot camp, a race through an obstacle course, will cost $5-$10. Whoever completes the course in the shortest amount of time will receive a trophy.
All proceeds go towards The Fisher House, except what is won for Penny Wars.
“We are going above and beyond,” said Esteban Silva, Kappa Sigma vice president.
Those who want more information on performing at the benefit concert can contact Ian Maryfield at iamaryfield@my.okcu.edu
Those who do not wish to participate but want to donate can talk to a Kappa Sigma member. All donations are welcomed.
