Homecoming week is now well under way, with a number of events planned for this week.
Tonight’s event, a window competition, will allow organizations three hours to complete the painting of their window.
“It’s a pretty stressful event for them,” said Jack Malone, mass communications senior and homecoming chair.
Each organization has its own take on this year’s Homecoming theme, “Let the Games Begin,” which the committee decided on after the summer Olympics.
“We felt like that was an all-encompassing theme, especially with The Hunger Games and the Olympics, we felt like there were a lot of options to choose from,” Malone said.
In the banner competition, each organization unveiled a different theme when the campus community came together for homecoming kickoff.
“After seeing the banners, it was cool to see how every organization chose something different to do with the theme,” he said.
During homecoming kickoff, President Robert Henry entered the gym carrying a lit Olympic torch. The event then moved to the quad, where the torch lighting continued.
Henry borrowed the torch from Robert Spinks, the chair of Sociology and Justice Studies at OCU.
“Spinks works in United Way and was actually a torch bearer in the Salt Lake City Olympics,” Malone said.
After the Olympics, Spinks was allowed to keep the torch he carried. He is letting the homecoming committee borrow it for homecoming week.
Homecoming continues with Lip Sync at 7 p.m. Friday and the basketball games at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday. Spirit structures are also on the calendar.
“I’m most excited to see the spirit structures go up on the quad,” Malone said.
These structures go up late Thursday night and must be complete by 1 p.m. Friday.
“It is neat to see how each organization utilizes their space,” he said.
