The university’s men’s soccer team is getting some help this year from overseas.
Five of the 22 players on the roster are international students.
Three of these five players are essential to the Stars’ success. Joe Shulberg, a junior from Huntingdon, England, patrols the net. Other notables are Kieran McLachlan, a sophomore from Airdrie, Scotland, and Adam Black, a junior from Liverpool, England. Black is the Stars’ top scorer.
“Adam Black had a tremendous influence on the team last year, and he’s only gotten better. Even though people are aware of his potential, he’s still found some ways to find the net,” Coach Brian Harvey said.
The Stars’ defense also has been a key component of their success.
“They’re playing very well,” Harvey said. “At the moment, we’ve got two or three players we can go to score goals. Collectively, as a unit they are doing very, very well.”
While the international students may grab the spotlight, they know that every member of the team contributes to the Stars’ success.
“Everyone does their fair share,” Black said. “If you look at it, the majority of goals have come from me and Kieren, but the way we play the game back home is at a different level.
“It’s the game we’ve played since we’ve been brought up.”
Whatever the reason for the Stars’ success this season, they’re off to a good start, he said.
“There are a lot of seniors this year,” Black said. “They all want to do well in their last year.
“The defense is being brilliant so far, so if we can keep that up, it looks like we’re going to have a good season.”
