The numbers are still out for a new campus fraternity.
Phi Gamma Delta (FIJI) fraternity officials will continue hosting rush events this week. New fraternity officials will give out bids until they leave on Oct. 7, said Adam Whitten, FIJI representative.
“We can still give out bids because we’re not a part of IFC yet, because here we’re just a colony,” he said.
When fraternity officials leave, the men who receive bids will rely on local FIJI alumni for support, so officials are looking for men who are strong leaders, Whitten said.
“The types of guys we’re looking for are involved on campus and are academically focused,” he said. “They have to have a GPA of at least a 3.0.”
FIJI officials have spoken to about 40 men about pledging. One of the men is Jarred Johnson.
The mass communications junior said he hopes to be one of the fraternity’s founding fathers.
“I thought it would be a unique opportunity to build something from the ground up,” he said.
FIJI was brought to campus because of high rush numbers, said Corey Hill, IFC adviser.
Before FIJI is recognized as a fraternity on campus, it must go through a process called colonization. The profess takes a year and a half, Hill said.
Until the colony becomes a chapter, men who pledge will be considered “colony brothers,” Whitten said.
The next FIJI rush event will be pizza with FIJI graduates at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow at Hideaway Pizza, 6616 N. Western Ave.
