Members of the Greek community are using the month of October to promote their philanthropies.
Alpha Chi Omega sorority is hosting Domestic Violence Awareness Month beginning Saturday.
The cause aligns with Alpha Chi’s goal of developing strong women, President Karen Aguilar said.
“Alpha Chi just wants to create really strong women,” she said.
The sorority raised more than $1,000 Sept. 17 at the “Have a Pie with Alpha Chi” event, which was donated to the Young Women’s Christian Association, an organization which provides career and health services to women.
Alpha Chi will participate in the Light the Capital event, which shows statewide support in the fight against domestic violence, the first week of October, Aguilar said.
“Schools will come and perform, and you can hear stories and listen to speakers,” she said.
Alpha Chi is looking for other ways to promote awareness during the month, Aguilar said.
“Healthy relationships are a big part of our life here,” she said. “It’s nice to build strong women and strong relationships.”
Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity and Gamma Phi Beta sorority are partnering in hosting Cancer Awareness Week from Saturday to Oct. 7.
Lambda Chi will inform the campus on the signs and symptoms of prostate cancer, said Tevyn Hill, sophomore external vice president.
He said many people are affected by prostate cancer, and his goal is to reduce that risk.
“I think it is an important thing to know about, because it is such a big deal,” he said. “People need to know what to do to prevent it.”
Gamma Phi Beta’s focus is ovarian cancer, said Natasha Scearse, senior National Ovarian Cancer Coalition chairwoman.
The week will start with Gamma Phi’s biannual event, Pancake Palooza, which will be from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. Saturday in the Gamma Phi Beta house.
“Hopefully we will have our famous pumpkin pancakes,” Scearse said.
The week is important to Gamma Phi because it helps honor the battle that past and current sisters have faced, she said.
Clay Puckett, business sophomore, said he looks forward to events such as Pancake Palooza and sees the importance of bringing awareness to OCU.
“I think it’s important for people to take a stand for these philanthropies,” he said.
