Senators will present eight pieces of legislation March 29 at the weekly Senate meeting.
The meeting will start at 8 p.m. in Room 214 on the 2nd floor of Dulaney-Browne Library.
Seven of the pieces are bills to be presented for various organizations.
The requests of the bills are as follows:
-SB 048, authored by Sens. Erica Olavarria (junior-at-large) and Anthony England (junior-at-large): Delta Alpha Chi is requesting $390 to cover expenses for advertising and food for the fraternity’s Homeless Awareness Week. DAX will portray a homeless lifestyle April 11-15 by “begging” for donations outside and sleeping on the Quad Lawn, the bill states.
-SB 049, authored by Sens. Sarah Cook (Greek/president pro tempore), Caleb Howard (freshman-at-large) and Justin Blumer (law): Student Government Association is requesting $104.18 to fund the 2011 SGA Relay For Life team. The expenses requested will be used for coffee and coffee supplements, which will be sold at the event. The team chose the theme of “Stay up all night, the cure is in sight,” the bill states.
-SB 050, authored by Sens. Howard, Emma Velez (sophomore-at-large) and Katie Alsup (sophomore-at-large): Velez, Relay For Life co-chairwoman, is requesting $600 in order to rent three generator lights for the Relay For Life event April 1. The expenses requested will serve as a deposit. All money refunded will be returned to Senate, the bill states.
-SB 051, authored by Sens. England and Olavarria: The OCU Pep Dancers are requesting $350 to purchase uniforms, posters and supplies for use for cheering at basketball games, the bill states.
-SB 052, authored by Sen. Howard: The Wish Upon A Star Relay For Life team is requesting $100 to purchase supplies to tie-dye shirts, which will be sold at the Relay For Life event. All proceeds from shirt sales will be donated to the American Cancer Society, the bill states.
-SB 053, authored by Sens. Andrew Long (senior-at-large) and David Scott (business): The Oklahoma Intercollegiate Legislature is requesting $856 to cover registration and hotel accommodation expenses for a spring conference. The spring session will be hosted April 13-17 at the Oklahoma State Capitol, the bill states.
-SB 054, authored by Sen. Cook: Sigma Tau Delta is requesting $440.84 to cover expenses to print copies of the 2011 Edition of the Scarab, the bill states.
A resolution to create a university freshman mentor program also will be presented at the meeting.
The purpose of the resolution is to assist students in their transition to college by giving them a means of meeting other freshman, the resolution states.
If passed, the mentoring program will become an extension of freshman orientation to include a session of mentoring groups that combine groups of freshman from an array of backgrounds and majors, the resolution states.
Mentors for the program would be chosen based on a list of requirements not limited to GPA and campus involvement. A goal of the resolution is to allow mentors to receive community service hours through the program, the resolution states.
Aside from legislation, Senators will also name a Senator of the Month at the meeting.
