Jake Fox, kinesiology sophomore, will bring back to campus what he has learned from training in Washington D.C.Fox was nominated for and awarded a scholarship through the American Red Cross which gave him the opportunity to receive training. He serves as an on-campus recruiter for the organization.
He said he hopes to increase OCU’s blood donation numbers at a blood drive from 1 to 5 p.m. Feb. 24 in the Great Hall in Tom and Brenda McDaniel University Center.
The university has hosted blood donation drives for the past three years, but only about 90 units of blood are collected each year, Fox said.
“This percentage is pretty sad, especially considering that every two seconds people are in need of blood,” he said. “Anyone given the opportunity to save someone’s life should take it.
“Why not take 30 minutes of your life to help save someone else’s?”
Fox has “a lot of enthusiasm,” said Athletic Director Jim Abbott. Sports officials nominated Fox for the Red Cross scholarship.
Fox said he is willing to work with any student who has an interest in giving blood.
The average donation takes 30 to 40 minutes, he said.
