The OCU Women’s golf won their first tournament of the spring season at the Las Vegas Shootout.
Paige Wood, a freshman from Mckinney, Texas finished first on the championship run, senior Natalie Gough from Bixby, Oklahoma finished second on the run, and freshman Raegan Chaney from Ardmore, Oklahoma finished third on the championship run.
The Stars say that in order to win this game, they have worked hard over a long period of time in order to complete this win.
“My team is great about being naturally competitive and we all push each other to become better every day. The practice we do to prepare for tournaments isn’t done a few days before. We work hard every day since the day we got here, which is what counts and results in our success. We will play games and complete drills together to keep the culture of our team thriving and it also makes practice super fun,” Wood says.
The Stars have nationals approaching in late May. They only have a few tournaments to compete in before nationals.
Freshman Paige Wood says she is excited about her first college national tournament.
“I know personally for this season I’m pumped for nationals this late spring at the end of May. It’s a great time to show all of the hard work we’ve put in as a team and show that we grind for every tournament knowing we’re prepping for nationals. Since it’s my first year I cannot wait to experience my first college national tournament,” Wood says.
Wood says that in order to secure her individual win she had to make sure she was prepared mentally.
“I was very excited the first day after seeing I was in the lead. I knew the hardest part was grinding out day two knowing everyone was coming for my spot. I did a lot of mental preparation leading up, and I knew it would come in handy and I was very thrilled going into the last hole knowing I won. My teammates were beyond supportive and I’m so lucky to have them by my side. As excited as I was to win, I was almost more excited knowing with the support I received it will be the best three years to come,” Wood says.
The next tournament is at the South Dakota State Jackrabbit Invitational at Boulder Creek Golf Club on March 14 and 15.
