OCU’s softball team is 11-0 this season. They are ranked number four in the Preseason Coaches’ Poll.
The Stars last played against Mcpherson Kansas on Feb. 19 and won 9-0.
Lexi Duff, a senior from Lone Grove, Oklahoma, said that being this successful as a team isn’t a new feeling to the stars.
“It is a great feeling to be undefeated so far, but it is not a new feeling to our program. Winning is an expectation and we expect a lot out of ourselves and each other! This program only lost six games last season, we are hoping to cut those losses and really attack our schedule this year,” Duff said.
Duff also said that being a senior makes these achievements different than they would have been in her previous years on the team.
Duff said that being a senior “bring(s) a new sense of pride of wanting to leave a legacy on the program with my teammates and fellow seniors Kennedy Jackson and Nicole Robinson. It also brings a new responsibility to fill the shoes of past seniors and team leaders and to continue this positive roll we are on.”
She said the stars work on their mental game to win their games.
“I think the main way we train to accomplish this is we practice with the mindset that we cannot be beaten by other teams, we can only be beaten by ourselves. So we train to compete with ourselves every day and push for those great plays, great pitches, or great hits. One thing we work on with our mental game is to be more confident in ourselves and each other,” Duff said.
Duff said that she is looking forward to the rest of her senior season.
“I’m looking forward to a great few months with my team. They are all like sisters to me and I am so blessed to have this time and this experience with them. We are looking forward to a great regular season run, and hopefully an even better post season run. I think the games we are most looking forward to are conference title games, and opening rounds. But, we have to keep the ball rollin first,” Duff said.
With the Stars still early in the softball season, it should be interesting to see if they can keep their winning streak. The stars are scheduled to play next against the Science and Arts Drovers on March 1. Their conference game will be on May 16.
