Gallery: How To Tie Dye

On Friday, April 9th, Religious Life hosted their annual Love Not Hate Day Celebration. While the festivities may be over, Student Publications photographer Mackenzie Shaw created a guide on how to tie dye T-shirts for those who missed out!

Step 1: pick out your very own Love Not Hate Day T-shirt and dunk it in a bucket of water.
Make sure it is completely soaked!
Like this! (You can’t completely tell from the picture, but it’s completely soaked, I swear!)
Step 2: form your tie dye design! To make a classic spiral, pinch the fabric and begin to twist.
Keep twisting until the whole T-shirt has been included.
It’ll look something like this (but remember, every tie dye project is unique and might take on its own form)!
Step 3: add rubber bands around your project, crossing them so they look somewhat like a snowflake. Step 4: add whatever colors any way you like!
I decided to just use orange, but you can be as adventurous as you want!
Step 5: put your creation into a plastic bag and tie it up. Let the dye soak for about 24 hours.
Step 6: 24 hours later, rinse your tie dye masterpiece with cold water until the water runs out clear.
Step 7: wash your T-shirt on cold, by itself. Yes, I did use a whole washer in a full college dorm for only one t-shirt. Sorry not sorry.
Step 8: tumble dry or let air dry! Wear and enjoy! You made a thing!
