On Feb. 23, OCU’s Student Government Association announced the Let’s Talk initiative to increase mental health resources and awareness on campus.
As part of the Let’s Talk initiative, SGA posts mental health resources on their social media outlets twice a week to encourage their usage. These resources include campus counseling services, the National Suicide Hotline and specialized LGBTQ+ crisis hotlines.
Caleb Evans, secretary of SGA policies and initiatives, first introduced the idea last spring semester.
“COVID-19 delayed the rollout of the initiative, which was difficult given that increased isolation has also increased and exacerbated mental health issues,” Evans said. “Our main course of action is simply broadcasting the available resources for students on campus through social media and posters. Really, we are trying to let people know what their resources are, and where they can find them.”
SGA President Reid Powell said he believes the Let’s Talk Initiative is crucial for many reasons.
“We hope that by spreading resources and awareness, the stigma around acknowledging mental health and asking for help will be lessened,” Powell said.
Powell said it is important to ask for help and to lead with kindness.
“This year has undoubtedly been tough for all of us, for both collective and individual reasons. Look out for those around you and don’t be afraid to talk to someone if you are struggling.”
Catherine García, music theater sophomore, said she is enthusiastic about this new development.
“I think it is wonderful that the SGA is publicizing these resources to help students,” García said. “While many students want help, I think oftentimes they don’t know that these resources are available to them.”
Students can look on SGA’s Facebook and Instagram pages to learn more about the Let’s Talk Initiative and further upcoming mental health/awareness initiatives.
