Oklahoma City University has partnered with Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine to provide interviews at OSU’s college for select OCU pre-med students.
On Feb 23, OCU released an article on their website announcing that pre-med students will be guaranteed an interview with OSU’s College of Osteopathic Medicine if they meet certain academic standards.
Helen Gaudin, professor of biology and associate dean of the Petree College of Arts and Sciences, said she learned about OSU-COM’s guaranteed interview partnerships with other state universities in the fall. She promptly reached out to the administration to implement the partnership at OCU.
“This program is a positive development for those interested in medical school,” Gaudin said. “It gives students a peace of mind to know that if they meet certain academic requirements, they will be eligible to interview at a competitive medical school.”
Students must have at least a 3.5 GPA and a 500 MCAT score in order to receive an interview.
“We are confident in OCU students’ interview skills, as we conduct mock interviews at the College of Arts and Sciences. Our students are thoughtful in their responses and enthusiastic about their futures,” Gaudin said.
Gaudin said she believes having this unique opportunity could peak students’ interest in OCU’s science department and in applying to medical school.
“If this opportunity was present when I was applying to college, it would have had a heavily positive influence on my final decision,” Gaudin said.
Students can speak with their advisors for more information on how to get involved in this program.
Certain pre-med students have already shown an interest in the new initiative. A pre-med junior who requested anonymity said they’re thankful for the new partnership.
“I think it’s fantastic that by meeting those statistics, I could potentially have a guaranteed interview at a competitive DO school,” they said. “Applying to medical school is already so difficult, both mentally and financially. By having that option, my stress levels will lower a bit!”
