David Meyers, mass communications senior, is planning on joining the big leagues.
Meyers hails from Johannesburg, South Africa and hopes to compete in the Professional Golfers’ Association.
“I’m going to try and go professional,” Meyers said. “I’ll probably play in September and from there just try and play pro golf for a couple years after school.”
Meyers said he has been playing golf for most of his life.
“I started playing when I was three or four years old,” he said. “I remember getting my first pair of golf shoes, and they were 10 sizes too big for me, but I still wore them every day. I also remember my mom having to replace a lot of windows in the house.”
In his time at OCU, Meyers was named three-time Golf Coaches Association of America all-American, two-time NAIA all-American, NAIA all-freshman, two-time national player of year semifinalist, three-time all-region, conference player of the year and two-time all-conference, just to name a few of his honors and awards.
Meyers said he was intrigued by OCU’s reputation.
“I was recruited by an old coach. The golf program has won a lot of national championships, and this school has a lot of alum playing golf professionally, so they have a pretty good record,” he said. “The education is also top notch, with small class sizes as opposed to big schools.”
Will Fore, accounting junior, played with Meyers on the OCU men’s golf team.
“We met through the golf team and just started hanging out more,” Fore said. “He’s a pretty good golfer. I admire his golf game.”
Fore said he appreciates Meyer’s dedication to perfecting his skill.
“He’s diligent. He doesn’t put stuff off,” Fore said. “When he’s working, he’s doing what he needs to do, always trying to better himself.”
Fore said he wishes Meyers the best of luck when he graduates, and that he knows Meyers will be successful.
Meyers said OCU golfers should cherish their time at school.
“I’d say to golfers, it’s gone by so fast. I’d tell them to really enjoy their time in college. Five years have gone by so fast,” Meyers said. “Practice as much as you can in college and enjoy it because it’s really nice being in a team atmosphere.”
