An LBGTQIA+ activism group is starting a new chapter on campus.
Spectrum is an organization that acts as a supportive community for LGBTQIA+ individuals and allies. Mikel Kendrick, acting freshman, decided to restart the group on National Coming Out Day of this year. Spectrum previously had an OCU chapter that dissolved a few years ago.
“It died out a couple years ago,” Kendrick said. “So I talked to Russ Tallchief. I rebooted it and brought it back. I’m excited we have it because I feel like we need it.”
The previous chapter ended due to a lack of availability from everyone involved, said Matthew Hester, film alumnus and former president of Spectrum. Members had difficulty arranging meetings due to everyone’s lack of free time. Hester said they are happy Spectrum is returning to the campus community.
“I wanted it to be bigger,” they said. “Hopefully some fresh leadership and new members will bring Spectrum to the next level. Further than I ever could.”
Any student is permitted to join Spectrum, regardless of gender.
“That’s what the A is for,” Kendrick said. “Allies.”
Spectrum’s next event will take place on Dec. 1, World AIDS Day. Members will have an informational table on the quad and may also organize a candlelight vigil and live music.
