Student jobs were recently created at the English Second Language (ESL) Center in Harris Hall.
Several positions have opened up for students to become IELTS (International English Language Testing System) Invigilators. Invigilator responsibilities include proctoring the IELTS tests for ESL students and handling registration for the tests.
“It’s a little more high-intensity than just proctoring a test and hanging out,” said Avery Ketchum, IELTS administrator. “It is a very high security test. Lots of people try to pretend they’re someone they’re not to take the test and get the score they need. And so the invigilators not only carry out the test, but they are checking for identity fraud and things like that.”
The tests take place on two Saturdays every month, and invigilators are asked to attend at least one shift a month. Every testing day has a shift from 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and one from 12:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Every testing period has a floater, a person assigned to escort testers around the building and perform odd jobs. In the afternoon shift, invigilators handle registration and identity verification, rather than proctoring tests.
Some students said there aren’t enough jobs on campus available to those without work study.
“I felt lost and confused when searching for a job on campus,” said Gareth Forsberg, acting sophomore. “Because the three places I knew offered jobs had specific time constraints on when to be able to work, and so it took me a year and a half to find a job that fit me and my schedule. I think that the IELTS invigilator job would be very accessible to students due to the convenient times on Saturdays.”
Students can apply to work as IELTS invigilators by either searching the job title on Glassdoor.com or speaking to Ketchum at Harris Hall’s ESL Center. The job does not require federal work study.
