This week’s Feature Friday exposes the thoughts of a long-revered but scarcely heard from campus figure: the Chickasaw Warrior statue.
The Chickasaw Nation gifted the statue to the university in 2012, placing it in a position of honor on the quad. Benches surround the warrior’s pedestal, giving students a place to rest and appreciate campus culture.
Q: Why do you face boldly toward the east, rather than another direction?
A: I like to watch the sunrise.
Q: Why are you made of bronze?
A: Gold is too elitist, and steel rusts like crazy. I may corrode gradually over time, but I will never rust. Thanks for looking out for me, Enoch Kelly Haney (that’s my designer).
Q: Does it get tiring to hold that position for so long?
A: It is my occupation, and duty to remain a stable and constant figure on this campus, when so many other aspects of life are fleeting. I never tire of my passions, Ms. Tokach.
Q: Do you ever feel cold during the winter months?
A: I’ll admit that my shirtless form feels personally attacked during hailstorms. However, I’m a big fan of all other types of precipitation. Rain keeps me showered and fresh, and a blanket of snow acts as just that.
Q: Since you can’t move, is there anything you’d like students to do for you?
A: I do like conversation. I don’t necessarily need to speak, but I love when students sit around me to talk or eat. Don’t be afraid to come to me and vent. I’m excellent at keeping secrets.
Q: If you could be anywhere else on campus, where would you be?
A: I always thought it might be fun to move to the top of the Gold Star building, but I get that it’s the star’s domain. It might be fun to reside in the Hall of Queens, even though that place freaks me out.
Q: What is something that really annoys you?
A: Geese.
Q: Who is your favorite person on campus?
A: Anyone on the facilities staff. They keep me well-groomed and happy.
Q: If you could choose a new plant to add to your garden, what would you pick?
A: I realize it’s not very practical, but I’d love to have few healthy ferns around.
Q: What is something no one knows about you?
A: I’m a really big fan of reading Shel Silverstein.
