Kappa Sigma’s Military Heroes Week begins today to help raise money for veterans, friends and loved ones in the military.
Kappa Sigma is the largest college social fraternity in the world with more than 200,000 members in the United States and Canada. The Kappa Sigma Military Heroes campaign takes place every year, with each chapter raising funds for the cause.
Since 2007, the Kappa Sigma Military Heroes Campaign has raised over $1,000,000 to aid veterans across North America, said Jake Bannerman, production management senior.
“The Military Heroes Campaign is an initiative that consists of organizations focused on providing care for veterans and their families,” Bannerman said.
The yearly campaign supports ongoing care for military veterans and their families, and aggressively pursues opportunities to assist the nation’s veterans with financial and organizational support to help them overcome the battles they fight every day, according to the Kappa Sigma website.
Their website said the Military Heroes Campaign is “primarily funded through donations and philanthropic fundraising from local Kappa Sigma Fraternity undergraduate chapters.”
Last year, OCU’s Kappa Sigma chapter raised just over $2,000 for the campaign, said Tristan Hutchinson, theater and performance sophomore.
“Some of our partners are Veterans Moving Forward, Healing Our Heroes Homes, the Veteran Success Resource Group and SEAL Legacy Foundation. All of these are amazing causes, being some of the most outstanding groups when it comes to making sure our heroes have everything they need,” Bannerman said.
From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. today, Kappa Sigma will be selling flags outside of Alvin’s Cafe. Later from 7-10 p.m., they will host a movie night on the quad. They will also be selling snacks.
Shirts will be sold from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m Tuesday. They will go for $15 outside the caf. Raising Cane’s will be supporting the cause from noon until they close, giving 15% of proceeds to the campaign when “Kappa Sigma” or “Military Heroes Week” is mentioned.
From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, shirts will continue to be sold outside the caf and Kappa Sigma members will deliver donuts to veterans in various locations.

The week will close out from 8 p.m. to midnight on Friday, with “Margaritaville” at the Kappa Sigma House. A $5 entry fee includes food, games and music.
“Margaritaville will feature all you can eat homemade tacos and volleyball tournaments, with the winners giving 10% of our earnings to the philanthropy of their choice,” Bannerman said.
Kappa Sigma members will also host a volleyball tournament during Margaritaville. There is a $15 cost for teams to sign up. All money from the tournament will be donated to the hurricane relief efforts in Texas and Florida. The winning team will also get to choose a philanthropy of their choice to receive 10 percent of the weeks earnings.
