Two of the four sororities on campus have continuous open bidding for girls who are not involved in Greek life but would like to join.
Recruitment for sororities typically takes place the week before school, during formal rush. Women are offered a bid to a house at the end of the week.
Continuous open bidding is different, because it is specific to one sorority and can take place any time of the year. The two sororities that are looking to add new members through this process are Alpha Chi Omega and Phi Mu.
“We are hosting small, less-formal events at our own discretion in order to get to know ladies that are interested in Alpha Chi,” said Cynthia Bedford, senior dance management major and Alpha Chi Omega president. “From those events we are able to offer bids to those ladies that can see themselves in our organization and that we believe would thrive in our organization.”
Abigail Padgett, nursing senior and Phi Mu president, said Phi Mu is looking to gain new women as well.
“We will be reaching out to unaffiliated women throughout the year and inviting them to casual events where they can interact with our members and learn about Greek life,” she said.
Continuous open bidding has been done in the past by both sororities and students who have gone through it have enjoyed it.
“I was very intimidated by the idea of formal recruitment and this was just a really good way for me to get to know the girls more quickly and easily,” said Madeline Dannenberg, junior music theater major and member of Alpha Chi. “I would recommend it as a good way to get to know the girls in a low pressure environment.”
Alpha Chi has held an open event for all women and invitations have been sent out to them on a person to person basis. They may also do another open event but is has yet to be determined. The end date on their bidding has not been set. Phi Mu will continue to do bidding all year round.
