As the beginning of the Rio 2016 Olympics signaled the end of the summer, I grew more and more excited to come back to school. Maybe I just missed everyone, but it seemed like every Olympic event or person somehow related to OCU. Here are a few of the connections I made:
1. USA Women’s Gymnastics Team: Every OCU dancer
OCU dancers have their specialty events (ballet, jazz, tap, etc.), and some Simone Biles of the school excel at all of them. For them, it’s just what they do. Meanwhile, the rest of the world stares with open mouths at the ridiculous ways they control their bodies.

2. Chinese swimmer Fu Yuanhui: OCU Science majors
Yuanhui exited the pool and and greeted the reporter with a shrug, saying she did the best she could. When she realized she won a bronze medal, she freaked out with joy, like a science major discovering they somehow earned an A from Dr. Nail.

3. Rio’s diving pool water: OCU wifi
The Rio Olympic diving pool water turned a nasty shade of green. Athletes complained, saying the water stunted their abilities. Similarly, OCU students complain about the wifi harming their ability to complete schoolwork and overall quality of life.

4. Fiji Rugby team: FIJI fraternity
Fiji’s rugby team earned the first gold medal for their country. Fiji is a small country, but they chose some quality guys who worked their butts off for that medal. Fiji is a small fraternity with quality guys. Is this a foreshadowing of Homecoming?

5. Zac Efron and Leslie Jones: President Henry’s famous friends
Even though neither of them actually had ties to the Olympics, NBC decided to fly Efron and Jones to Rio just because they could. President Henry brings his famous pals to OCU pretty frequently. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if he knew these two. I would be down for a Distinguished Speaker series featuring Leslie Jones.

6. Michael Phelps: OCU Caf brunch
The caf’s brunch doesn’t disappoint. Sometimes there are some questionable decisions (like Michael Phelps’s cupping, weed, and DUI), but in the end, it’s always pretty successful. You feel like one Willie pancake should be enough, but pretty soon, you’ve eaten 28.

7. Olympian grieving by trash can after a loss: Students with an 8am class the first day back from break

8. Ethiopian Robel Kiros Habte: Every single person at OCU
Habte was ranked 59th in the men’s 100m freestyle, and, as predicted, he finished dead last. He completed the race half a lap behind everyone else… The 100m race is one length of the pool.. At OCU, where we are constantly surrounded by beautiful, smart, talented people, we all feel like we’re in last place sometimes. Not everybody can win a gold medal. Habte finished dead last, but he did his best and felt happy with his performance. Though he didn’t make it past the first heat, he’s the one people will remember. We can’t be Katie Ledecky every day, so if you’re having a Habte day, follow his lead and don’t give up.
