OCU is hosting a tent at Open Streets again this year and students are invited to attend or volunteer.
This is the third year for Open Streets OKC an event hosted by the Oklahoma County Health Department’s Wellness Now Coalition.
“At our events, we reclaim part of a busy street for a few hours for non-motorized activity, according to Open Streets’ website. “Everyone attending is invited to walk, bike skate or board while they meet local business owners.”
Open Streets is between noon to 4 p.m. Sunday on N.W. 23rd Street. During Open Streets N.W. 23rd street will be closed to traffic between Western and Robinson avenues and Walker Ave. will be closed to traffic between N.W. 23rd and N.W. 30th.
OCU has participated in the event every year. This year OCU’s tent will feature music by OCUPELLA, poetry and a variety of games for children.
Students can volunteer to help set up and run the tent. All students who attend Open Streets are asked to wear OCU gear and OCU blue.
“There will be 25 to 30 thousand people at the event and it would be great if everyone wore their OCU blue to remind everyone that we are here,” said Cary Pirrong, director of alumni relations. “Uptown 23rd is our front door and if there is a festival here we need to take part in it so we don’t get pushed out by OU and OSU. This is our community and we need to support our community.”
Local food trucks will be parked at the event but none of the tents are allowed to sell anything during the festival. There is no cost to attend.
“I have never been to Open Street’s but I’m going this year and I’m really excited because it sounds fun and I think the weather will be nice,” said Abby McBroom, music education sophomore.
Students can volunteer or contact Cary Pirrong for more information by calling him at 405-208-5463.
