The Miss Black Oklahoma City University 2016 crowning ceremony was last Saturday in the Burg Theater of the Kirkpatrick Fine Arts Center.
The Black Student Association hosts the event. This year there was no pageant.
“This year we decided to not do a pageant because our focus was on building BSA,” said Cassie Stegall, BSA adviser. “I definitely think there will be a pageant next year and it’s going to be amazing.”
Kelsey Simmons, mass communications sophomore, was chosen based on her interview with five judges and her platform.
Simmons’s platform is awareness of sexual consent on college campuses.
“It’s really about making people aware that no means no and that your body is your temple,” she said.
The judges were Risk Manager Lee Brown, Law Professor Danne Johnson, Alumnus Rhameil Sampson, and University of Oklahoma staff Kaneisha Lloyd and Tanya Mustin.
“Miss Black OCU is really important to me because it really shows the diversity that campus has and how different cultures are important,” Simmons said. “To me this is just more of an aspect where we can show the different ethnicities and cultures, and really unite them together on campus.”
The ceremony was followed by a reception in the Bass Atrium, where Simmons took pictures and socialized with attendees.
