OKLAHOMA CITY — The Military Affinity Group at Oklahoma City University is planning to recognize Veterans Day by passing out yellow ribbons and MREs (meals ready to eat) from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursday.
The military student group will hand out the meals and ribbons at the Tom and Brenda McDaniel University Center near Florida Avenue and N.W. 25th Street.
“We want to give students a taste of what the food is like in war zones,” said Derek Gordon, president of the Military Affinity Group. “Some people may have seen movies and read reports about great food served to military personnel.
“That’s a rarity during combat operations. Even though it’s impossible to recreate the experience of being in combat, this is one small way to show what it’s like in order to raise some appreciation for what our brave colleagues overseas are going through.”
The group encourages the OCU campus community to wear yellow ribbons as a show of support to veterans and military personnel. The Military Affinity Group at OCU was established a year ago to help military personnel and veterans find funding for their education and to serve as a social network for the students.
