Chance Johnson, president of Student Government Association, delivers the 2016 State of the Students speech, where he discusses things SGA has been working on and things he hopes to accomplish this semester.
Despite facing a $45,000 budget cut this academic year, Johnson says SGA has a plan and a model for future generations that is not dependent on financial resources.
“This will be crucial to our most well known policy priority at this point, the campus food service resolution,” Johnson said.
SGA is looking to pass this legislation next week, which includes:
- Lifting restrictions on taking food out of the Caf
- Developing new meal plan options
- Refunding unused meal costs
- Opening campus events to other food vendors
- Disclosing the prices of all prepackaged items in Alvin’s Cafe
SGA will continue to discuss budget allocations to the law school’s Student Bar Association in order to streamline the process and make it more efficient.
SGA will also continue working with the facilities department to organize an easy and effective process for recycling on campus.
Nic Rhodes, SGA vice president, and the Student Senate are discussing new proposals for the number of senate seats.
Lois Medina, director of special projects, and Katie Schneider, secretary of public relations, have revamped the Stars Advantage program.
“Now participating businesses will be marked by a decal on their front door and students will simply need to provide their campus ID card in order to receive the benefits,” Johnson said.
The number of student senators hit an all time high this year, and for the first time in years the student court is filled.
“SGA, regardless of how you feel about it, can and will be your voice with administration,” Johnson said. “Don’t leave that responsibility to someone else. Take action and be a voice, not only for yourself, but for those around you.”
SGA elections will take place in March.
