First-Year Experience has canceled a weekly event due to low attendance.
FYEdays are canceled for the remainder of the academic year. FYEdays were hosted on Friday evenings throughout the Fall semester in Walker Hall dormitory for new students. The program was designed to help new students get to know each other and the University.
FYEday events included Minute to Win It, Just Dance Tournaments, Coffee with the Cops, Jump into OCU, Live Stress Free, Moving on Up, and Ramen Off.
“I think the time I chose this year wasn’t the most compatible with student schedules,” said Colbi Beam, first-year experience coordinator. “If I decide to do this program again next year I would do it on a week day, during the day in a more accessible location.”
Some students agree the time prevented them from attending the weekly events.
“I never had time to go because it’s on Fridays and I was always busy then,” said Celia Tedde, music theater and vocal performance freshman. “It seems like it could have been cool though. If they were on a better day I would’ve liked to go.”
Some element of the program will continue.
“Learning in the Lobby” will return during finals as a collaboration between FYE and Learning Enhancement Center. LEC tutoring services will be available in the Walker Lobby to help new students work on their first round of finals with snacks and study help.
Beam said she is unsure whether the program will be brought back next year.
“A time change to the program would likely increase attendance to the event and make them more enjoyable” she said.
