Student Government Association officials donated a $2,500 sign to the athletic department after students and faculty complained about it.
The electronic sign, which hung last spring in Tom and Brenda McDaniel University Center, now hangs in Abe Lemons Arena in Henry J. Freede Wellness and Activity Center.
SGA officials purchased the LED sign last year to advertise campus events. The 6-foot sign hung on the wall near the entrance to the caf.
Chance Johnson, Student Government Association president, chose to move the sign after complaints about its appearance.
“SGA received complaints from a few people in multiple departments,” Johnson said. “Many faculty members and students didn’t like the appearance of the sign, mostly due to its size.”
One student said she did not see a purpose for the sign.
“I was just really confused about why it was there, why it didn’t do anything and then why it was suddenly gone,” said Alanah Hosford, cell and molecular biology sophomore.
By the time SGA officials decided to remove the sign, it was too late to return it.
“The options were to either give it to someone and let them use it or it would just sit idle in the office somewhere,” Johnson said. “There didn’t seem to be any justification to that.”
Jim Abbott, assistant vice president of intercollegiate athletics and director of athletics, agreed to take the sign, which hangs in the gym and displays upcoming game information and announcements of student awards.
