An internationally recognized humanitarian’s visit is rescheduled for Tuesday.
Sister Rosemary Nyirumbe originally was scheduled to speak Sept. 23, but the event was rescheduled after she encountered problems traveling out of Uganda.
She will speak at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Petree Auditorium in Kirkpatrick Fine Arts Center.
Nyirumbe is a Catholic nun known for risking her life rescuing women captured by Joseph Kony and the Lord’s Resistance Army.
She also directs the Saint Monica Girls’ Tailoring Centre in Gulu, Uganda, a safe harbor for former abductees.
The center provides job training in catering, tailoring and other skills for women, many of whom were raped, tortured and forced to murder as involuntary members of Kony’s army.
Nyirumbe has helped 2,000 women, and the center houses 250 women and 250 children.
She was honored as a “CNN Hero” and was one of Time Magazine’s “100 Most Influential People” for 2014.
Through the help of Pros For Africa, a non-profit organization that helps college students volunteer to work in Africa, as well as the United Methodist Foundation and St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, she is able to come speak at no cost.
Nyirumbe is scheduled to speak to several groups including OCULeads students, local clergy, the student body, faculty, and the community about her humanitarian work.
She also has a book about her experiences, co-authored by Reggie Whitten, founder of Pros For Africa, with proceeds going directly to the Saint Monica Center.
Students still look forward to hearing the sister speak.
“It kind of threw me off a little bit because I was planning on going, but I’m excited I get to go see her,” said Felicity Owens, sociology junior.
The event does require reservations and groups are welcome. Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a Q&A afterward.
Reservations for the event can be made at okcu.edu/sisterrosemary/RSVP.
