The John Hoyle Carlock Jr. Learning Center moved this semester from Walker Center for Arts and Sciences to the Dulaney-Browne Library.
During prioritization the LEC was recommended for transformation, meaning that it is important to the university but it could work better.
Prioritization is the process in which university officials can see where money is being spent in every department. It is designed to determine what academic and support functions are necessary and what functions can be altered based on budget.
“The library gets more visibility and we are able to use the same people with more resources close by,” said Victoria Swinney, director of the library. “The goal was to provide more service without spending more money.”
The LEC provides students with free one-on-one tutoring in all subjects.
“The LEC was very helpful for me. It helped me catch up when I wasn’t understanding something in class freshman year,” said Hunter Swink, marketing senior.
Moving the LEC to the library will make it more accessible to students and there will also be more resources available in the new location.”
The LEC opened Sept. 8 in its new location on the library’s first floor.
The hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays.
Students still are working as peer educators and went through more training for this semester with Paul Gebb, director for the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, and Karen Schiler, assistant professor of English.
Students were trained on how to develop a relationship with their client and how to focus a session on what is most important.
Another new feature is the ability to check the schedule of available subjects and to reserve a session online on the library website.
Subjects include math, writing, English as a second language, and specialized tutoring for music.
Eventually, the LEC also will allow students to schedule an appointment during the weekend outside of the regular hours.
Students wanting to make an appointment for tutoring can visit libguides.okcu.edu/lec.
Students must make an appointment at least 24 hours in advance.
