- Although The Girl & The Tree loses something in cultural transposition, the two-minute short from Moin Samadi touches on universal themes of love, loss, and the ravages of both war and time. Samadi’s animation calls to mind both comic books and traditional Japanese art – a combination that is both beautiful and unique. Regardless of its esoteric details, it’s a short that’s sure to hit home. Check it out here.
- Amelia, a two-minute short by Tanguy Weyland, answers the question, “What if Amelia Earhart was actually just on an acid trip in an aquarium?” The film doesn’t do much, but what it does, it does well. Weyland’s 3D animation is impressive, combining realism with fantasy (giant glowy sky-fish!) to great effect. See the short here.
- Iain Gardner’s five-minute The Tannery was a great hit on the festival circuit, and it’s easy to see why. The short follows a fox’s afterlife experience, revealing exactly what happens to the souls of the poor little critters we sometimes turn into clothing. It’s exactly as depressing as it sounds, but it’s wrapped in a stunningly animated package that puts Disney to shame. In a word: heartbreaking. Find it here.
