The musical Brigadoon, written by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe, will be the first main stage musical of the semester.
Brigadoon tells the story of two men, “Tommy” and “Jeff,” who are unsure of love. The two men take a trip to Scotland before Tommy gets married and ends up getting lost.
The two men stumble across a small village, Brigadoon. But the village isn’t like a normal village, it is outdated compared to the current time period.
Come to find out the village only appears for one day every 100 years and the two men came across it the one day it appeared.
As the story develops Tommy, the main character, finds himself falling in love with “Fiona,” a resident of the fantasy village.
Tommy is faced with the fact that he has a fiancé back in America and is now head over heels for this girl in a mysterious village.
“It’s a story of true love rather than the illusion of love,” said Dr. David Herendeen, director of Brigadoon and opera and music theater. “People have to show a soft side. It’s healthy in a world full of news bytes of harshness, it’s therapeutic.”
Herendeen also described Brigadoon as “really romantic but in an old school way, as opposed to what we see on TV and in movies today.”
“This show will make you smile, laugh and maybe even cry,” said Casey Andrews, music theater freshman who plays the role of “Jeff.”
“It’s really a stunning piece, and the set is gorgeous too.”
The show will take place at 8 p.m. April 24 and 25 and at 3 p.m. on April 26 in Kirkpatrick Theater in Kirkpatrick Fine Arts Center.
Tickets are available at the box office, 405-208-5227 or online at okcu.edu/tickets.
“Come see these shows because one day they’ll be on Broadway when it’s expensive,” Herendeen said. “Invest now and say that you saw them when they were young and students.”
