- Based on a short story by Ádám Bodor, Hearth (Otthon), a five-minute short from director Bálint Gelley, is a typhoon of surreal images, death, and rebirth. It follows a man who is trying to save a young girl and three old women from drowning after an unexplained natural disaster. The short is visually stunning – despite its muted, watercolor-like palette – and emotionally evocative. Watch it here.
- Chris O’Hara’s two-minute short A Different Perspective is the rare experimental film that works both as an étude and as a story. It follows an alien life form and his quarrel with an old man and his dog. It’s packed with visual jokes and it gets a lot of mileage out of a simple premise. Check it out here.
- Pedro Ivo Carvalho’s seven-minute Vagabond is one of the best short films I have ever seen. It is impeccable in every sense, with visuals that combine the best of Ghibli and Disney and characterization that make the almost mute characters come to life. It’s about a man and his dog, but like all good stories, it goes far beyond its plot elements. You must see it here.
