Wednesday at the Wesley will host Flat Tuesday, a traditional pancake dinner marking the last day before the season of Lent.
Flat Tuesday is a free event from 5-6:15 p.m. Feb. 17 in Watson Lounge in the lower of the Chapel.
The season of Lent is the six weeks leading up to Easter, it is a tradition observed by some Christians as a way of ‘fasting’ or giving up something in order to focus.
“It is a time of giving up something as a way to focus their attention on their spiritual development in preparation for Easter,” said Rev. Rodney Newman, director of religious life. “Historically, there are different traditions leading up to Ash Wednesday.”
Flat Tuesday is an English tradition in which people indulged in a pancake dinner the night before Ash Wednesday. There are other traditions as well, most commonly known is Mardi Gras in New Orleans. Mardi Gras is actually ‘Fat Tuesday’ in French, so Flat Tuesday is used as a play on words. The Caf will be hosting a Mardi Gras theme night Feb. 17 as well.
Wednesday at the Wesley is still using food provided by Sodexo, but not for Flat Tuesday. There will be griddles set up around the room. Delta Alpha Chi and Kappa Phi will be the ones prepping, greeting and cooking for the event. There will be a gluten free option, as well as toppings such as, chocolate chips, blueberries and strawberries.
“I think Flat Tuesday is important because Lent is a really important season in the Liturgical year,” said Logan Herod, vocal music education and church music senior. “I will be participating in Lent, but I normally add something rather than take away.”
Herod uses lent as a resolution in order to better herself. This year she is resolving to work out more because she is training for a 5K.
