The softball team was picked as favorite to claim the Sooner Athletic Conference 2015 softball title, according to voting by the league’s coaches in the annual preseason poll announced Wednesday by the league office.
The Stars, who finished last season with a 55-13 record, have won 19 previous SAC championships. OCU was voted first on five of eight ballots and finished with a total of 62 points.
St. Gregory’s, last year’s regular-season winner, was a close second receiving the three remaining first place votes and 59 total points. Oklahoma Baptist was ranked third with 46 points, while Texas Wesleyan was fourth (41), Science & Arts fifth (39), and Mid-America Christian sixth (31). Southwestern Christian (21) and Southwestern Assemblies of God (15) rounded out the poll.
The 2015 softball season begins Feb. 1. The SAC champion will determined by the league’s post-season tournament. All eight teams qualify for the tournament with the SAC Championship game set for May 2 at Oklahoma City University.
