Gamma Phi Beta will host Pancake Palooza from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. on April 5at the Gamma Phi Beta house.
The sorority will sell all-you-can-eat pancakes for $5. All proceeds will benefit the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition.
The NOCC works to improve knowledge about the disease’s early symptoms. They also assist newly diagnosed women and provide support to their caregivers.
Brooke Bradley, music theater sophomore and Gamma Phi Beta philanthropy chair, said ovarian cancer prevention is especially important to their chapter.
“Many years ago, we had a sister who died of ovarian cancer within our house,” Bradley said. “Since then, it’s just been on our hearts to raise money for that cause.”
Gamma Phi Beta will promote ovarian cancer awareness on April 3 outside the caf for Go Teal Day. The sorority encourages students to wear teal and take pictures to send to the NOCC website. They will pass out pamphlets with information about how to detect the warning signs of ovarian cancer.
“I don’t think people realize how many women are affected by it,” Bradley said.
Gamma Phi Beta will sell buttermilk, confetti, chocolate chip, and gluten-free pancakes. Nutella was chosen as a People’s Choice flavor; voting closed at midnight on April 2. The flavor ballot included red velvet, blueberry, bacon apple, banana spice and cheesecake.
Student musicians will play throughout the event, and Gamma Phi Betas will present ovarian cancer facts every 30 minutes.
The sorority hosts this event twice a year.
“It’s been a Gamma Phi Beta tradition on this campus for a long time,” said Brenna Mullins, dance management junior and Gamma Phi Beta public relations vice president.
Last semester’s Pancake Palooza raised money for their international philanthropy, Building Strong Girls. This charity supports Campfire USA, an organization dedicated developing passion and character in children and teens, and Girls on the Run, a nonprofit girls running program.
“The whole idea is building resiliency in girls, and making them able to resist bullying, stand up to peer pressure and have healthy relationships,” Mullins said.
