The Office of University Advancement is hiring callers for the OCU Phonathon.
Students will be paid $10 an hour to contact university alumni by phone to update their information and request donations.
“It’s so important for students to know how the gifts from our alumni support their education,” said Carrie Sauer, assistant director of annual giving.
Jaron Reid, nursing sophomore, participated as a Student Ambassador last year.
Reid said he enjoyed the experience, and he plans to participate again this year.
“The connection you make with the alumni is cool,” Reid said. “You actually get to know them.
“And you feel good about doing something for the school.”
The money collected can go into different funds such as scholarships, academic program support, technological advances, and the OCU fund.
The OCU fund is unrestricted and can be used for any financial need.
The Phonathon ran for five days and raised $9,085 last October.
The Phonathon ran again in June and raised $2,825.
“So far, it’s been successful,” Sauer said. “It’s a chance to learn about what’s going on in our alumni’s lives and for them to learn what’s going on here. It goes both ways.”
About 20 students will be hired.
Students must speak English fluently with a strong and clear phone voice.
Callers also must be confident, friendly and personable, and have evening availability. Students will work about five to10 hours per week.
The phonathon will be hosted from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Nov. 10-14 and Nov. 17-21 in the Small Gardner Room on the third floor of the Meinders School of Business.
