OCU’s Phi Mu colony became a chapter Saturday, during their initiation and installation ceremony.
The ceremony was at 10 a.m. in the Great Hall in Tom and Brenda McDaniel University Center.
Phi Mu National President Kris Shetler Bridges and two national council members performed the installation ceremony.
There is second initiation ceremony scheduled for Monday for women with scheduling conflicts.
Phi Mu joined Alpha Chi Omega, Alpha Phi and Gamma Phi Beta as the fourth sorority on campus following an extension process last spring.
The women of Phi Mu are founding members now that they have completed the necessary requirements for membership.
Phi Mu Chapter Consultant Elise Bradshaw was eager for the colony to become a chapter.
“We really want to empower the women, so we jumped right in,” Bradshaw said. “It’s just how we do it.”
The Phi Mu members had their first formal meeting as a chapter, where they elected their 2013-14 chapter officers.
Officers are:
– President: Kaytlin Rice, dance performance sophomore;
– Vice President: Erica Barton, dance performance junior;
– Secretary: Eleanor Nason, economics sophomore;
– Panhellenic Delegate: MaryAnn Grover, ecnomics/finance sophomore;
– Phi director: Lydia Wagner, music theater sophomore;
– Recruitment Chair: Arden Walker, music theater sophomore, and
– Treasurer: Caitlin Farris, economics sophomore.
The chapter is electing a faculty adviser.
Bradshaw will remain on campus to support the chapter until the end of the semester.
Anna Bardrick, acting senior, said she is excited to be an official member of Phi Mu.
“The moment we became a chapter, all the walls came down between us, and we really bonded in our sisterhood even more,” Bardrick said.
Phi Mu plans to continue their work at OKC’s Ronald McDonald House this semester by cooking meals and caring for families in need.
The Ronald McDonald House provides lodging, meals and support to families with ill or injured children.
“It gives them the opportunity to take a break and focus on what is going on in that moment,” Bardrick said.
