The lip sync competition for Homecoming is Friday, Nov. 1.
Organizations write and choreograph a short performance to a pre-recorded track. Performers are not allowed to make any noise of their own.
“It’s really interesting to see how they interpreted the theme, how they took the theme, what they’re doing with the theme,” said Thad Ernst, religion junior and president of the Student Activities Council. “It’s kind of like a party but with a purpose.”
Nine organizations will compete this year. They are:
Alpha Chi Omega, Alpha Phi, Gamma Phi Beta, Phi Mu, Kappa Sigma, Lambda Chi Alpha, Phi Gamma Delta, Delta Alpha Chi and Kappa Phi, and TESOL International Association.
“Its so popular because a lot of people put a lot of hard work into it, and just to see that kind of play out into fruition on Friday night, where emotions are running high, and there’s not a lot of sleep,” Ernst said.
“But people go out there and give it 100 percent, and every one of them is awesome.”
The organizations began working on their performances before Fall Break after the theme for this year’s Homecoming, “Start,” was released.
“Its very highly competitive because we have so many talented people on this campus,” Ernst said.
“Friday night’s kind of like we made it, we’re here, this is the last thing, we get to see all of our friends. It’s a fun atmosphere.”
Ernst said he encourages everyone, participating or not, to attend the lip sync performance on Friday. Alumni even attend to support the organizations they were involved in.
“We do put a lot of time and effort, and I believe that the talent of our school really shows that week,” Ernst said. “There’s a lot of energy, and it’s so much fun.”
Lip sync is one of the two events that Phi Mu, the new sorority on campus, will be competing in.
“We’re just going to be there to support and have a good time,” said Lilly Lantigua, Phi Mu colony president.
Gamma Phi Beta won last year’s lip sync competition.
“We concentrated on having fun and bonding as a sisterhood,” said Alysson Johnson, acting sophomore and Gamma Phi Beta member. “And winning was just a byproduct that showed how much we love our sisters.”
Lip sync is scheduled for 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1 in Henry J. Freede Wellness and Activity Center.
