The learning enhancement center provides free tutors to help students improve in any class.
The John Hoyle Carlock Jr. Learning Enhancement Center has free tutors assisting in all major subjects offered at OCU.
The LEC is in Room 235 in Walker Center for Arts and Sciences. It is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday.
Students can sign up for 50-minute tutoring sessions on the sign-up sheet on the entry desk of the LEC or can call (405) 208-5040 to set up a session. Students may drop in to determine if a tutor is available.
“Tutoring is beneficial not only for students being tutored but also for the tutor, who improve their skills by working with others,” said Dr. Terry Phelps, English professor and learning center director.
About 300 students use the LEC each year, most commonly to assist with research papers and academic writing. The tutors work with students to learn how to correct course problems on their own.
Hillary Champlin, acting senior and learning center tutor, has worked at the LEC for four years. Champlin tutors English and converses with many international students to assist them in pronunciation and vocabulary.
“The LEC is a really great place to work with student employees of many majors.” Champlin said.
There are 26 tutors in the LEC. Some of the tutors work for course credit, some for work study or student hire, and some volunteer.
Phelps said he usually choses his tutors by looking at their ACT scores. Every tutor picked is required to train with Phelps for two weeks before tutoring students. Phelps said he does this so he knows each student being tutored is getting the best assistance possible in any subject.
Any student interested in becoming a tutor in the LEC can contact Phelps to discuss the opportunity. Phelps can be reached by phone at (405) 208-5236 or by email at tphelps@okcu.edu.
