The women of Alpha Chi Omega are hosting Domestic Violence Awareness Week through Friday.
The organization will raise money for Oklahoma City’s YWCA and The Alpha Chi Omega Foundation.
The YWCA helps victims recover from domestic violence.
The Alpha Chi Omega Foundation promotes domestic violence awareness.
The week’s events began Monday with the DVA DIY party at the Alpha Chi Omega house.
Students gathered to write encouraging letters, create toiletry kits and make tie blankets for women at Oklahoma City’s YWCA.
The Have a Pie with Alpha Chi event is at 8 p.m. tonight at the Alpha Chi Omega house.
Students can pay $5 to eat unlimited pie at the event.
The proceeds from the event go toward Alpha Chi Omega’s philanthropies.
Pumps For Power, Alpha Chi Omega’s newest event, begins at 4:30 p.m. Friday on the quad lawn.
It costs $10 for individuals and $30 for teams of four.
Both men and women will walk a mile across campus in high heels, completing various gender-specific tasks along the way.
Alpha Chi Omega will provide the heels or participants can bring their own.
“We’re trying to defy gender roles,” said Molly Stryker, Alpha Chi Omega vice president of philanthropy.
“Our goal is to make people aware of domestic violence so that we can prevent it and won’t need to raise money for it.”
Several domestic violence survivors will share testimonies during the event.
“We need to show them that they’re not alone,” said Sunny Gay, Alpha Chi Omega member and music theater freshman.
