The Aduddell Center has decided to keep their fitness center hours the same, but students can expect more classes and intermural sports this year.
The current hours for the fitness center are 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday, and 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday. The gym is not open 24 hours a day.
Nick Stowers, assistant director for student life intramural and recreational sports, said these hours are for student employees, as well as student safety
“We open later on Sundays to allow our employees to go to church,” Stowers said. “I can’t ask the employees to stay overnight to work.”
Stowers said that the gym is not available during hours that are not staffed to ensure the students that use the gym stay safe. All fitness center employees are trained in safety procedures.
“Especially with the weight room that we have, the gym needs to be staffed for students to use it,” Stowers said.
Victoria Renard, dance management junior, said she would like to see more hours during the weekends.
“Since my church service doesn’t start until 11 a.m., I would like the gym to be open earlier than that,” Renard said.
During the hours that the gym is closed, students are invited to use the exercise equipment in the residence halls. There are treadmills located in Walker, United Methodist, Banning, Smith and Draper Halls. Elliptical machines have also been placed in Walker and United Methodist Hall.
Stowers said the fitness center does offer intramural sports for students looking to be more active without going to the gym.
“We’re hoping to have a bigger turnout in intramural sports this year,” Stowers said. “The activities are open to everyone, not just the fraternity guys.”
Stowers said the fitness center staff is also considering offering classes for students, at a small fee. These classes could include everything from CrossFit to yoga.
Renard said that the fee could be the deciding factor in whether or not she would attend fitness classes.
“I would take classes offered by the fitness center,” Renard said. “It would just depend on how much they cost.”
