OCU Cares is helping with the Moore, Okla. tornado relief effort on Sept. 21.
OCU Cares is a new way for organizations to keep track of member service hours and fundraisers. The Moore event is the first opportunity for groups to use OCU Cares.
“Moore is part of our community, and this is a good way to give a part of us,” said Trey Witzel, Senior-at-large member of Student Senate.
On May 20, an EF5 tornado left a 17-mile scar through a heavily populated area of Moore.
Cleanup is still needed in some areas, while homes in other areas are being rebuilt. An estimated 1,200 homes were destroyed.
OCU Cares will be the university’s community outreach program that encompasses and recognizes all philanthropy and service projects done by the OCU community.
“It would make things so much easier,” said Courtney Beyer, acting freshman.
Student Government Association is introducing OCU Cares by helping with the relief effort in Moore.
Volunteers are not limited to campus organizations.Anyone affiliated with OCU may help. Volunteers will help work crews clear debris.
Fraternities Kappa Phi and DAX are attending as a group.
“I hope they feel good that they have helped those who are in most need of it,” said Edgars Boitmanis, vice president of SGA.

Volunteers will need to provide their own transportation. Lunch will be provided.
