An anthology of creative works published by Sigma Tau Delta is making a comeback this semester.
The Scarab is a compilation of student-submitted pieces ranging from poetry, essays, and short stories to photographs, art, and film.
The long-running journal gets its title from Oklahoma City University’s original mascot, the scarab beetle.
The return of The Scarab is an exciting development for Sigma Tau Delta, as the once annually printed publication has been paused in recent years. “The Scarab has been on something of a hiatus the past couple of years, so the big excitement is getting the journal up and running again with the hopes of releasing the next issue this semester!” Said Kate Odum, Editor-in-Chief of The Scarab.
The publication is being revived through the collaboration of English majors and Sigma Tau Delta members. The Scarab is still in production and currently accepting submissions of student work.
The deadline to submit a piece to be considered for The Scarab is March 14th. “Once we have a good pool of submissions, we’ll begin the selection and formatting process. Until then, we’re focused on marketing and getting the word out about our 2025 issue!” Odum explained.
The selection process is student-driven, with a review team that evaluates each submission and decides which works will be included in The Scarab. “Our general rule-of-thumb is that if a submission receives three stamps of approval, then it’ll likely be in our issue!” said Odum. “But bear in mind that content doesn’t always determine whether or not your work will make it into the issue! Sometimes, we might piece together a cohesive theme, or we have so many to choose from that we can’t include them all!”
With the submission deadline approaching, The Scarab team is eager to see the variety of creative and intellectual work produced by students this year. The 2025 issue of the revived journal is set to be released sometime later this semester.
For interested students, work can be submitted via email to scarabliterary@yahoo.com.
