Now that classes have started, Oklahoma City University students have been easing back into the swing of things here on campus.
Beginning a new semester of classes can be exciting, but it can also be intimidating. Whether it’s their first semester at OCU or their last, this guide is designed to help students shine like the stars they are this semester.
Academics may come first and foremost; however, they can oftentimes be difficult to stay on top of. For this reason, OCU provides students with a myriad of resources to help them succeed in their academic endeavors.
The Student Success Coordinators at OCU are always available to help guide students. With their in-depth understanding of course work, degree plans, internship opportunities and campus connections, they are committed to ensuring that students stay on track and thrive in their respective majors.
The Learning Enhancement Center located at the Dulaney-Browne Library is another resource available to OCU students. At the LEC, students have access to peer services, which allows them to have one-on-one sessions with peer educators.
In these sessions, students can receive guidance in writing, subject-specific tutoring, and academic coaching. Best of all, students can schedule their appointments at a time that works for them and their busy schedules.
Academics may be a key aspect of college life, but they aren’t everything. There are plenty of avenues on campus for students to branch out through extracurriculars. “Finding at least one point of involvement and connection outside of the classroom not only enhances a student’s life socially, but it also leads to higher rates of retention and academic success.
Joining a club, honor society, fraternity or sorority, band, or gaming group are excellent ways to get involved and enhance the student experience.” Said Dr. Levi Harrel-Hallmark, the Dean of Students at OCU.
However, juggling classes, work, athletics, clubs, and other extracurricular activities can be overwhelming for students who take on such heavy workloads. “Balancing life as a college student can be tricky!… Don’t be discouraged, we are all human and have our limits. What works for one person may not work for the next. Finding what works for you, specifically what goals and boundaries are needed to achieve your unique goals, is the place to start.” Said Harrel-Hallmark.
“The number one obstacle I’ve had to overcome is managing everything at the university. There’s so much to do, and with auditioning and several acting classes, I also had to find time for me and to hang out with friends.” Said freshman acting major Kameron Berkley-Evans. Designating some time to focus on personal needs can be a simple yet effective method to keep oneself from burning out during the semester.
Developing a schedule that allows students to fulfill responsibilities while also having time to recharge can make a positive impact.
As the semester unfolds, remember that academic success isn’t only about hitting the books- it’s also about time management, seeking support when needed, and making the most of your time at OCU.
