What is outside, on the quad, has food, creates special moments and gives you the taste of summer?
OCU events allow all students and members of the university community the chance to step outside their major or field and broaden their perspectives.
The past few events such as the Coca-cola Throwback Tour, Miracle Marathon Food Truck Night, Solar Eclipse Viewing and Love Not Hate Day have been prime examples of such experiences.
During the Throwback Tour, Coca-Cola was handing out free floats to kick back and relax during this busy time of the school year.
Since 1986, the company has been making large financial donations to future college students and higher education.
In total, Coca-Cola has donated $50 million to schools and additional educational initiatives supporting the communities that need it most.
During the Miracle Marathon Food Truck Night, a variety of food choices were offered to help to give back to the Children’s Health Foundation.
Students enjoyed their delectables while playing yard games with fellow classmates.
During the Love Not Hate Event, Better Together threw a celebration of interfaith and diversity with snow cones, popcorn, music, photo ops and DIY tie-dye shirts.
Better Together is an interfaith group working to foster an inclusive space for all cultures and religions, on and off campus.
It was a chance, like many of these events, to catch up with friends and maybe do a cartwheel or two in the green grass.
Finally, during the Solar Eclipse Viewing, we experienced 93.6% coverage.
The university provided ISO glasses and fun snacks for viewers.
Coming from someone who has attended a plethora of events, this was the busiest I had ever seen the quad.
Since it was at 1:45 p.m. and many students were in class at that time, it was fun to see different groups of majors and teams in front of their respective buildings, taking a break outside for a few minutes.
For example, there were groups on the stairs of Gold Star, teams outside the Freede Center in their uniforms and crowds of dancers in ballet attire outside Ann Lacy.
According to NASA, the next solar eclipse will take place on August 23, 2044, so it was not a surprise that everyone was willing to stop their lives and experience this astronomical phenomenon.
Coming up as a final hurrah, there is a Summer Send-off on Thursday, April 25 from 6-8:30 p.m. on the Quad Lawn.
The information put around campus informs us that “we will have numerous fun activities, food, and crafts including: inflatable twister, Carnival Rides, adult-sized tricycles, design your own trucker hat, cotton candy, soda truck and candy!”
Even if you have not been to the past few events, take an hour or two to be outside, breathe in fresh air and make some final 2023-2024 school year memories.
