Recently, the OCU Ethics Debate Team, sponsored by the Meinders School of Business, traveled to Cincinnati to compete in the APPE Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl National Tournament.
The OCU team qualified for Nationals after their undefeated first-place victory at the Rocky Mountain Regional Ethics Bowl back in November of last year.
The National Tournament took place over two days and saw 36 different teams from universities across the country compete for the national title. The 36 teams competed in four qualifying rounds, which determined the top eight teams that would move on to the quarterfinals, semifinals, and ultimately, the finals.
During each round of the tournament, two teams would be asked a debate question and were then given only two minutes to discuss amongst themselves and formulate their stance.
Following the two-minute period, the teams were then tasked with presenting and defending their arguments. The debates revolved around topics related to various ethical issues, ranging from artificial intelligence to lithium mining.
During the four qualifying rounds, the OCU team contended against Stanford, Texas State University, Vanderbilt and The Citadel Military School.
The team ended up having close ties with both Vanderbilt and Texas State University, a loss against Stanford and concluded with a strong victory against The Citadel Military School. Unfortunately, the team was unable to move on to the quarterfinals.
The OCU team displayed an incredible performance at nationals, managing to rank amongst the top of all Universities nationwide, even placing higher than prestigious institutions like Harvard, Princeton and Yale.
