Anticipation is building for students at Oklahoma City University as the Student Government Association’s elections loom nearer.
Several positions are up for grabs for student leaders, but many have their eyes set on the Presidential & Vice-Presidential joint ticket.
The filing period for prospective candidates was open until Friday, March 15 to run for any offices.
All prospects must be in good standing with the university’s registrar and Office of Student Affairs, as well as holding the minimum GPA requirement of 2.5 for graduate students and 3.0 for undergraduate students.
Any student previously removed from leadership in SGA must wait one semester before running for another position.
The Student Senate has 20 seats available in its Academic, Special-Interests and At-Large districts.
All senate seats may be filled by only one candidate, except for the eight At-Large district seats available.
At-Large district seats are divided by grade classification including freshman, sophomore, junior, senior and graduate, with two seats available within each of them.
However, with Freshmen At-Large seat elections being held early next Fall, only four of the senate At-Large districts may be filled during the upcoming election.
Students interested in running for either president or vice president have additional requirements for eligibility.
According to the SGA’s constitution, presidential contenders must serve in SGA for at least one semester before running for president, while vice presidential contenders must serve specifically in the Student Senate for one semester to be eligible for office.
Both positions come with a large ordeal of tasks, but also are compensated generously with benefits recently including housing scholarships and hourly pay.
Additionally, if a student is elected as president, they are prohibited from serving in a presidential level position for another organization while holding office.
The campus community can expect to learn who is running by Tuesday, March 26, followed by elections beginning on April 1.
