Early in the month of the March, OCU’s University Worship service celebrated International Women’s Day by amplifying female voices and emphasizing the foundational role of all members of the body of Christ.
When I was asked to deliver the sermon, my brain was immediately filled with courageous, groundbreaking women of the Bible.
We are reminded through their stories of the way that God uses His people for the good works of the Church.
Women have been a vital part of ministry since the beginning of time and have been leading a way forward.
My prayer is that we can all become a bit more like those women. Like Deborah who stood up against oppression; Mary Magdalene proclaiming the good news; Priscilla building and expanding the Church; the matriarchs of our past have led us here today.
May we continue to be encouraged by their fight, motivated by their desire to push past barriers and stereotypes, and do so in the name of love for God and humanity. Let us all take part in the work God is calling us to: to love and serve those around us.
“God our nurturing Mother, we meet you here. Created in your image, you have called us each by your Spirit to do good works. Through great women of history, you have shown us your goodness. Help us follow in their footsteps, O God. Help us see the strength and goodness in all your children. Transform our hearts to celebrate the love and grace of all people. We as women are bearers of your divine image and equal partners in the journey towards justice and equality. Send us out in your motherly spirit to do your work. Amen”
