Leaders at Oklahoma City University’s Student Government Association (SGA) are working hard to close out the academic year strong.
With elected terms ending relatively soon, student leaders are looking to keep busy, rolling out new initiatives and legislation.
Amongst their recent undertakings, the SGA’s Student Court, in partnership with the Campus Police Department, has officially implemented a new ticket appeal process, allowing students to appeal parking tickets with student court justices.
So far, only two students have submitted forms to appeal for their tickets, according to Chief Justice Sonny Tabor. However, more are expected before the year-end.
Students can find ticket appeal forms in the Campus Police Department, adjacent to the university’s admissions building.
Additionally, three student government positions fell vacant over the winter break, including two senate positions and one court position.
Currently, the student senate has only filled one of these vacancies, recently swearing in Erika Pena as the new Sophomore At-Large Senator.
The Deputy Chief Justice and International Senator roles are in the process of being filled.
Students interested in running for office for the upcoming school year should soon anticipate official communication about elections, as SGA leaders are expected to release important details regarding the filing process.
Chief Justice Tabor reflects on the upcoming election, sharing, “SGA is a good place for those interested in making a change on campus.”
However, executive cabinet positions such as President and Vice President are exclusive to students who have served in SGA for at least one semester.
Despite this, any student in good academic standing with the university may run for any of the qualifying 18 senate district seats, including six at-large positions.
Last year’s filing period began March 6th, with incumbent President Anthony Carranza and Vice President Tate Smithhart facing off against MacKenzie Moon and Sophie Smith.
