The Lunar New Year has arrived, and here at Oklahoma City University, the campus community has been taking time to honor the special occasion.
Recognized on Feb. 10, Lunar New Year marks the beginning of the new year on the lunar calendar. A time for fun and celebration for many Asian cultures, there were plenty of ways for students and faculty to celebrate the Year of the Dragon on campus.
On Jan. 31, the Student Activities Council (SAC), Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (ODEI), Pacific Islander Asian American Association (PIAAA) and Student Government Association at OCU hosted an event to commemorate the Lunar New Year.
Students, faculty and staff were invited to gather in the student lounge outside the Caf for an evening of food, activities, and entertainment to start off the Lunar New Year right.
Those in attendance were treated to authentic Asian cuisine and a build your own boba bar. Participants were also given the option to decorate fans, sing karaoke or participate in the Lunar New Year tradition of exchanging red envelopes.
Perhaps the most riveting part of the event was during the traditional dragon dance performance by the Hung Viet Dragon and Lion Dance Association, fitting as it is the Year of the Dragon.
The Lunar New Year festivities did not end there; on Feb. 8, ODEI in conjunction with PIAAA continued their observance of the holiday outside the student lounge. Students that stopped by were able to learn more about the Lunar New Year and its significance and were given egg rolls and red envelopes containing coupons.
OCU’s Lunar New Year celebrations turned out to be a success, giving everyone on campus the opportunity to enjoy the holiday.
With the new year now underway, let us hope that the Year of the Dragon brings prosperity to our campus communities.
