Mental, physical, and emotional health is an extremely important aspect to thriving, not only as a student but as a person, so as the spring semester of the 2023-24 academic year begins, remember to prioritize yourself.
Oklahoma City University holds the true but not so endearing nickname of “Over Committed University,” which can be seen in the stressful lives of its students.
Between classes, concerts, musicals, athletic events, plays, dance shows and club affiliations, life at OCU can easily become overwhelming, which means it is even more important to be careful about how you treat yourself going through the semester.
Remember that it is completely fine to take time for yourself, to have moments where you need a break, to occasionally unwind, let loose and rediscover yourself in the chaotic world of learning, performing and socializing.
Sometimes homework can wait, sometimes practice can take a backseat, sometimes your responsibilities to the school can take the night off.
Planning your day out can help with this stress, from learning the best times for homework, naps and eating, to discovering the best ways around campus and where to hang out.
Reminding yourself of the level of importance of things is essential as well, with an easy example being classwork; if a ten-point worksheet and a fifty-point essay are due in the same night, prioritizing the essay might be a better decision.
Another great way to keep balance in your life is to create non-negotiables— things that you do no matter what is going on around you.
Examples of setting a non-negotiable would be always going to bed at 10:00 p.m. or making sure you eat lunch every day.
Non-negotiables give you a constant and can provide relief even when it seems like the entire world is crumbling around you.
Remember to have fun, strive for success, learn from mistakes and take care of yourself as we embark on the second half of our school year.
