Oklahoma City University’s Student Government Association passed its first piece of legislation to add the Smashburger permanently to the Kitchen 1904 menu under the name Burger’s Burger.
Some may remember that the Smashburger was a limited-time item that Kitchen 1904 had already run, but under its new name, it will be a full-time item.
The Burger’s Burger derives its name from Martha Burger, who was Oklahoma City University’s eighteenth president, making university history by becoming the first female president. She served from July 2018 until her retirement in June 2021.
Burger already had ties to the university when she took the presidency, earning her MBA here in 1992, and receiving an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letter in 2012.
Burger was inducted into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame in 2020 and will now be honored once again by the university with a meal named after her in Kitchen 1904.
This legislation was created by business senator Ben Ball and passed unanimously. Ball worked closely with Randy Largent, Assistant Director of Food Services for Campus Dining Services, and the Kitchen 1904 staff to bring this dream to life.
Ball said that this new item and name means “commemorating someone who went above and beyond,” as well as explaining that Burger is “a huge advocate for the school and the students.”
Ball spoke highly of the former president, saying that she always “puts students first,” as well as remembered a talk that the two had where Burger spoke about how she missed seeing what students do after they leave the university most.
Burger’s Burger is just another way to honor the great things that the former president has done for the university.
